DUNDAS bag (burel) |
Burel is a Portuguese artisanal fabric produced in the center of Portugal. It is made from 100% wool of the Bordaleira sheep from the mountains of Serra da Estrela. After shearing, the wool is washed, carded, spun and woven into a fabric which is then pounded and scalded, turning it more compact and resistant. Burel was traditionally used to make the shepherds and farmers capes, coats and vests as it is very resistant, a natural insulator as well as water and fire proof.
The pattern in this bag is from original drawings that were hand-carved in linoleum blocks. These prints were then screen-printed by hand using water-based eco friendly textile inks.
DETAILS AND MAINTENANCE |
Lining is 100% cotton canvas.
Straps are made from vegetable tanned leather. Leather straps and details will darken with exposure to light and usage. They should be waxed from time to time for higher durability and beautiful aging.
Burel is easily maintained. The fibre structure repels dirt and allows for fast cleaning and drying after accidental spilling. For ironing, steam ironing is recommended using the wool setting.
